Choose it for a reason, not a preference
n8n attracts teams who like the idea of owning their infrastructure. That is a legitimate preference and a poor reason on its own.
Self-hosting means you are responsible for uptime, updates, backups and recovery. When a workflow stops at 2am there is no vendor status page to check — there is you. That cost is real and it is usually underestimated by people evaluating the licence cost alone.
The good reasons are specific: data residency requirements you must meet, execution volume where per-operation pricing genuinely does not work, or logic that needs real code. If one of those applies, n8n is an excellent choice. If none do, use a hosted platform and spend the saved effort elsewhere.

Questions
n8n Automation — common questions
Does self-hosting mean we have to maintain a server?
Yes, and that is the real trade-off rather than a technicality. Someone has to handle updates, backups, monitoring and recovery. If your team has no appetite for that, a hosted platform is genuinely the better choice even if n8n looks cheaper on paper.
Is n8n cheaper than Make or Zapier?
At high execution volume, usually — you are paying for infrastructure rather than per operation. At low volume it is often more expensive once operational time is counted honestly. The crossover depends on your volume, and we will model it rather than assert it.
Can n8n be hosted for us?
There is a cloud version, though it removes much of the data-residency argument for choosing n8n in the first place. If hosted is acceptable, it is worth comparing against Make on features rather than assuming n8n wins.
What about the custom code steps?
They are genuinely useful and worth treating carefully. Code inside a workflow is code nobody reviews and no test suite covers. We keep it minimal, documented and simple enough that someone else can read it later.
