Speed to Lead
Also written: lead response time, first response time
Quick answer
What is speed to lead?
Speed to lead is the elapsed time between a prospective customer submitting an enquiry and the business making first contact. It is tracked because published research shows qualification rates fall sharply as response time increases, particularly beyond the first hour.
Two studies are cited most often, and they are frequently conflated.
Harvard Business Review examined 1.25 million leads and found firms contacting a prospect within an hour were nearly seven times more likely to qualify the lead than those responding even an hour later. The same research audited 2,241 US companies and found 23% never responded to a web-generated lead at all.
The earlier MIT / InsideSales study found the odds of qualifying a lead dropped roughly 21 times between a five-minute and a thirty-minute callback.
That 21× figure is very widely attributed to Harvard Business Review. It is not theirs. If you are going to cite it, cite the MIT study.

- CRM AutomationCRM automation removes manual work from customer relationship management by automatically creating and updating contact records, moving deals between pipeline stages, triggering follow-up sequences, assigning tasks and notifying team members, based on defined triggers rather than someone remembering to act.
- Workflow AutomationWorkflow automation is software that runs a defined sequence of actions automatically when a trigger event occurs. A form submission, inbound call or pipeline change starts the workflow, which then sends messages, assigns tasks, updates records, books appointments or calls external systems according to conditional logic.

Follow-up that continues after everyone else has stopped
AI lead follow-up runs a multi-touch sequence across SMS, email, WhatsApp and voice after someone enquires. Language models personalise messages using what is known about the lead, an agent can call when messages go unanswered, and the entire sequence exits immediately when the lead replies, books or opts out.
An AI appointment setter that works your list every day
An AI appointment setter places outbound calls automatically — triggered by a new lead arriving, or worked through an existing list. It opens the conversation, confirms interest, qualifies against your criteria, handles common objections, checks live calendar availability and books the appointment, writing the outcome back to the CRM.
