Campaigns

Marketing automation that behaves like a person paying attention

Most marketing automation is a newsletter on a timer. The useful version watches what people do and changes what they receive accordingly.

Quick answer

What is marketing automation?

Marketing automation delivers campaigns and content triggered by customer behaviour and segment rather than by a fixed calendar. It covers lifecycle sequences, segmentation, behavioural triggers, reactivation campaigns and the routing of engaged contacts to sales at the right moment.

The problem

What this actually fixes

  • Everyone on the list receives the same email regardless of who they are.

  • Campaigns go out when someone has time to send them.

  • Engaged contacts are not identified, so sales never hears about them.

  • Unengaged contacts keep receiving mail, damaging deliverability for everyone.

  • Segmentation exists in theory and nobody maintains it.

  • Nobody can say which campaigns produced revenue.

Scope

What's included

Every engagement is scoped to what you actually need. This is the full deliverable list.

  1. Deliverable 01

    Segmentation model

Segments defined by behaviour and attributes that update automatically, rather than static lists nobody maintains.

  2. Deliverable 02

    Lifecycle sequences

Content mapped to where someone is in their decision, not to how long ago they subscribed.

  3. Deliverable 03

    Behavioural triggers

Campaigns firing on what people do — pages visited, links clicked, forms started and abandoned.

  4. Deliverable 04

    Engagement scoring

Identifying contacts warming up so sales can act while the interest is live.

  5. Deliverable 05

    Reactivation campaigns

Structured re-engagement for dormant contacts, and suppression for those who never engage.

  6. Deliverable 06

    List hygiene

Removing unengaged contacts, which protects deliverability for everyone still on the list.

How it works

From first call to running system

  1. Step

    Audit the database

Who is on it, on what basis, and how many are genuinely engaged. Usually a smaller number than expected.

  2. Step

    Define segments and lifecycle

The stages that matter and what each should receive.

  3. Step

    Build sequences

Triggered campaigns with proper exit conditions and suppression.

  4. Step

    Measure and prune

What produces engagement, and removing what does not — including contacts.

Use cases

Where this earns its keep

Long consideration cycles

Staying useful for months until the decision arrives.

Database reactivation

Working contacts you already paid to acquire.

Post-purchase lifecycle

Onboarding, cross-sell and retention driven by behaviour.

Prune the list

The change most likely to improve your marketing automation is removing people from it.

Sending to contacts who never open tells mailbox providers that your mail is unwanted, and they apply that judgement to everything you send — including to the people who do want it. A large dormant list is not an asset; it is a tax on your deliverability.

Businesses resist this because list size feels like progress. But the metric that matters is messages reaching engaged people, and that number frequently goes up when the list gets smaller.

Run a reactivation campaign, then suppress whoever does not respond. Uncomfortable, and it works.

Questions

Marketing Automation — common questions

How is this different from email marketing?

Email marketing sends campaigns to a list. Marketing automation decides who receives what based on behaviour and lifecycle stage, across channels. The practical difference is that someone who visited your pricing page three times gets treated differently from someone who has not opened anything in a year.

Why prune unengaged contacts?

Because sending to people who never open damages your sender reputation, which reduces deliverability for the contacts who do engage. A smaller engaged list outperforms a larger dormant one. It feels counterintuitive to remove contacts and it is one of the highest-return changes available.

What is engagement scoring for?

Identifying who is warming up so sales can act while interest is live. A contact who opened three emails and visited the pricing page this week is worth a call now, not at the next scheduled review. Without scoring, that signal exists in the data and nobody sees it.

How much content does this need?

Less than most people fear, if it is sequenced well. A modest set of genuinely useful pieces delivered at the right moment outperforms a large volume sent on a schedule. Content production is usually the bottleneck, so building around what you have is the pragmatic approach.

Can AI write the campaigns?

It can draft and personalise at scale, and it should not write unreviewed. Generic AI content is recognisable and it trains your audience to ignore you. We use it for variation and personalisation on top of content that a human decided was worth sending.
