AI SDR

Also written: AI sales development representative, automated SDR

Quick answer

What is an AI SDR?

An AI SDR is software that performs sales development work: contacting prospects, asking qualifying questions, handling common objections and booking a meeting or handing over to a human. It differs from an AI receptionist in direction — an SDR works outbound lists, a receptionist answers inbound.

The category is muddled because four different products use overlapping names. The distinction that actually matters is direction and job.

Term Direction Job
AI receptionist Inbound Answer, route, capture, book
AI appointment setter Outbound Book an existing warm contact
AI SDR Outbound Qualify a cold or semi-warm list, then hand over
AI voice agent Either The underlying capability, not a job

An SDR is the only one of these expected to work a list where most contacts are not expecting the call, which is why it is the hardest to do well and the easiest to do badly.

What it can and cannot do

Reliable: consistent qualifying questions, immediate follow-up at any hour, accurate logging of every attempt and outcome, and never skipping the list because it looks unpromising.

Unreliable: anything requiring genuine discovery, negotiation, or a judgement call about whether a non-standard situation is worth pursuing. That is where a human should take the conversation.

The compliance part is not optional

Outbound calling and messaging is regulated, and an AI making the call changes nothing about that. In the US, the TCPA governs consent and the FCC has ruled that AI-generated voices in robocalls fall under existing restrictions. Several jurisdictions require disclosure that the caller is not human. Calling-time windows and do-not-call suppression apply exactly as they always did.
