Lead Attribution
Also written: marketing attribution, source tracking
Quick answer
What is lead attribution?
Lead attribution is the practice of recording which marketing source, campaign or interaction produced each enquiry, so spend can be evaluated against outcomes. Models differ in which touch gets the credit — first, last, or a share distributed across every interaction in the path.
Attribution is less a reporting problem than a data-capture problem. If the source is not written onto the contact record at the moment of creation, no dashboard can reconstruct it later.
The models, briefly
First touch credits the interaction that first introduced the person. Answers “what creates demand”.
Last touch credits the final interaction before conversion. Answers “what closes”, and is the default almost everywhere because it is the easiest to record.
Multi-touch distributes credit across the path. More honest and considerably harder to maintain, since it requires every interaction to be captured against one identity.
No model is correct. Each answers a different question, and the useful discipline is knowing which question you asked.
Where it breaks in practice
- Phone calls. A call from an ad is invisible unless the number is tracked and written back.
- Offline conversion. A deal closed in person never returns to the ad platform, so the platform optimises toward the wrong outcome.
- Overwriting. A second form submission that overwrites the original source destroys the first-touch record permanently.
- Consent. Attribution depends on identifiers, and identifiers depend on consent. In GDPR markets, a rejected consent banner legitimately removes the data.
The version that is worth building
Capture source, medium, campaign and the first landing page onto the contact at creation, and never overwrite them. Record a separate most recent set alongside. That gives both first and last touch from one write, without pretending to a precision the data cannot support.

- CRM AutomationCRM automation removes manual work from customer relationship management by automatically creating and updating contact records, moving deals between pipeline stages, triggering follow-up sequences, assigning tasks and notifying team members, based on defined triggers rather than someone remembering to act.
- Sales FunnelA sales funnel is the sequence of steps a prospect moves through from first becoming aware of a business to becoming a customer. In practice it also names the set of pages, forms and follow-up built to carry someone through those steps, with measurable drop-off between each one.
- Pipeline StageA pipeline stage is one named step in a defined sales process, such as enquiry, qualified, quoted or won. Each opportunity sits in exactly one stage at a time, which makes progress measurable and lets automation fire when a record moves between stages.
Services that use this
A CRM structured around how you actually sell
GoHighLevel CRM setup involves designing the pipelines and stages that model your sales process, defining custom fields and objects to capture the data you need, structuring tags and segmentation, importing and de-duplicating existing contacts, and configuring the reporting those decisions make possible.
Make a working system perform better
Optimisation analyses a functioning GoHighLevel system to find where performance is lost — which pipeline stages leak, which sequences underperform, where timing is wrong, which lead sources convert poorly — then makes targeted changes and measures whether they helped.
Connect your stack so data lives in one place
GoHighLevel integrates natively with Google and Microsoft calendars, Stripe, Meta and Google Ads, and common messaging platforms. Anything else connects through Make, n8n or Zapier, or through direct API and webhook work where no connector exists for the system involved.
