Sales Funnel

Also written: marketing funnel, conversion funnel

Quick answer

What is a sales funnel?

A sales funnel is the sequence of steps a prospect moves through from first becoming aware of a business to becoming a customer. In practice it also names the set of pages, forms and follow-up built to carry someone through those steps, with measurable drop-off between each one.

The word does two jobs, which is why conversations about it go in circles.

The concept: more people are aware of you than consider you, more consider you than buy. The shape narrows. That is the funnel as a model.

The artefact: the specific landing page, form, thank-you page, booking calendar and follow-up sequence someone built. That is the funnel as a thing you can edit.

Where the drop-off actually is

Almost every funnel audit ends in the same place: the pages convert acceptably and the follow-up does not exist. Traffic gets scrutinised because it has a dashboard. The eleven hours between form submission and first human contact do not.

If you only measure one thing, measure the gap between submission and first contact attempt. The published research on that gap is covered under speed to lead.

A funnel is not a page

A funnel that ends at a thank-you page is half-built. The parts that decide the outcome are the ones after the form:

  • Instant acknowledgement, in the channel the person used
  • A defined owner and a routing rule — see lead routing
  • A follow-up sequence with an exit condition, so replying stops it
  • A pipeline stage that reflects reality, so nothing sits unworked
