Trigger Link

Also written: tracked link, trackable link

Quick answer

What is a trigger link?

A trigger link is a tracked URL that fires an automation when a specific contact clicks it. Because the click is attributed to a known contact record, it can update a field, move a pipeline stage or start a workflow, turning a click into a recorded intent signal rather than anonymous traffic.

An ordinary link tells you someone clicked. A trigger link tells you who clicked and lets the system act on it immediately.

What it is actually used for

Interest capture without a form. “Which of these three applies to you?” — three trigger links, three different follow-up paths, and no form to abandon.

Sequence exit. A contact who clicks the booking link should stop receiving reminders to book. Wiring the exit to the click rather than to a later calendar event closes the window where people receive a nudge for something they have already done.

Re-engagement scoring. A dormant contact who clicks anything is materially more interesting than one who does not. That is a cheap, honest signal to segment on.

The mistake worth avoiding

Trigger links only identify the contact when the recipient is known — the link carries an identifier. Forward the email to a colleague and their click is attributed to the original contact.

That is fine for scoring and wrong for anything consequential. Never use a bare trigger link click as the sole confirmation of a decision that matters, such as consent or a purchase. Confirm those on a page the contact actually completes.
