Database Reactivation
Also written: DBR, list reactivation, dormant lead campaign
Quick answer
What is database reactivation?
Database reactivation is a campaign that re-contacts dormant, previously unconverted records already held in a CRM, usually by SMS, email or voice. Because the acquisition cost was paid long ago, it is typically the cheapest source of pipeline available to a business with an existing contact list.
Most businesses have a list of people who enquired, did not buy, and were never contacted again. That list already cost money. Working it costs almost nothing.
Why it works when it works
The contact had a genuine need at some point. Needs recur, timing changes, and the competitor they chose may have disappointed them. Nothing about “not now” means “not ever” — but almost no CRM has a rule that revisits it.
Why it fails when it fails
Consent has lapsed or never existed. A three-year-old record is not automatic permission to text someone. Under GDPR and PECR in the UK and EU, and under the TCPA and A2P rules in the US, old records are exactly where consent problems live. Segment on consent before segmenting on recency.
The message is a broadcast. “We miss you” produces nothing. A specific, plausible reason to reopen the conversation produces replies.
Nobody is ready for the replies. A reactivation campaign to a large list generates inbound in a burst. If replies land in an inbox nobody watches, the campaign has actively damaged the list.
Sending pattern matters
Blasting a large dormant list in one send is the fastest way to a deliverability problem — it looks exactly like spam traffic to a carrier or mailbox provider. See SMS deliverability and email authentication for why.
Batch it, warm it, and watch the complaint rate rather than only the reply rate.

Services that use this
Work the list you already paid for
Database reactivation is contacting people already in your CRM who have gone dormant — old enquiries that never converted, past customers who have not returned, quotes that were never followed up. Because acquisition costs were already paid, conversion at even a low rate is typically the cheapest revenue available.
Follow-up that continues after everyone else has stopped
AI lead follow-up runs a multi-touch sequence across SMS, email, WhatsApp and voice after someone enquires. Language models personalise messages using what is known about the lead, an agent can call when messages go unanswered, and the entire sequence exits immediately when the lead replies, books or opts out.
Marketing automation that behaves like a person paying attention
Marketing automation delivers campaigns and content triggered by customer behaviour and segment rather than by a fixed calendar. It covers lifecycle sequences, segmentation, behavioural triggers, reactivation campaigns and the routing of engaged contacts to sales at the right moment.
